TANZBRISE by Windfall out of Tariana
|
Too too cool!
I just got a call from Itasophia's owner about this and asking if I knew where to get footage of Windfall. NBC is airing an hour (ONLY AN HOUR ) of highlights on Sunday, May 7, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. EDT. Does anyone else know where there is more coverage???

For NBC to air anything horsie except the Triple Crown is pretty amazing! Isn't there an equestrian cable channel?

If you go to the webite: www.rk3de.org and click on Live webcast Head of the Lake, you can watch the horses go through the approach (fish) and through the head of the lake complex.
Unbelievably, it's not raining today @ Rolex, so let's hope Darren & W get through w/their course before the skys open up (as they always do during Rolex!).
Piece of advice on watching the webcast streaming: turn off your pop up blockers or all you'll get is audio w/o video.
GO DARREN & WINDFALL!!

Huge bummer. The leaderboard shows they retired on CC. Looks like a lot were retired, withdrew, or were eliminated. Does anyone have more details?

Eliminated and withdrew I understand. What is "retired"?

I don't know the difference between retired and withdrawn. Both sound like a voluntary thing to me, something you do before you get eliminated. Maybe some of our eventing gurus can give us a tutorial on this?

The course got the better of lots of horses today. W had a stop @ the brush jump element out of the sunken road (at least that's what it sounded like online . . . sometimes the audio was double-tracking and this was not part of the video online coverage). They got it back together only to have a 2nd refusal @ head of the lake. Dropped in fine, but W would not hold the line @ the first duck (straight line jumps 2 ducks in a row, then out to a corner and you're on your way), so Darren was forced to go the long route. Apparently they had another refusal @ the 3rd water so Darren opted to call it a day.
As to withdrawn vs. retired; to me the difference is:
Withdraw - opt out (don't start) a "phase" (xc or stadium) due to conditioning, soundness, or you decide to add another event later in the season, have no chance to win the current event, and it's not worth the risk to your horse.
Retire - you start the phase, but pull up before finishing (any number of reasons: one horse today was laboring so much there was blood coming out of one nostril . . . rider wisely decided to retire on course vs. push him further, after 3 refusals, Darren obviously felt it wasn't their day and it was better to save his horse to fight another day).
If anyone else has a different understanding, I'd love to hear it - this has always been my understanding, but rule book may define it differently.

Thanks. That explanation made a lot of sense to me. Too bad Windfall was off today, after having such a good lead.

You're right, Kim. Darren retired W on course (3rd water). I spoke with someone there who saw the first refusal, then the 2nd at the 3rd water. It was hard to tell on the video of the lake (2nd water where he couldn't hold the line direction over the first duck) if windfall couldn't make the first duck due to the big drop/landing or for other reasons. Reports are that Windfall is fine this evening. Have a look at the xc results, this course did get the better of a lot of respected/experienced teams, others retiring include Kim Severson, Leslie Law, William Fox-Pitt and Bruce Davidson Jr: http://www.rk3de.org Congrats on a great dressage test, D and W, we're proud of you.

It sounds as if it was a poorly designed course. I've always thought a course was supposed to challenge the teams without overly endangering them or eliminating them. Or is my understanding incorrect?

It actually was a very well-designed course (by the same person who's designed in the past).
However, a CCI**** should be the supreme test of horse & rider, and both had to be @ the top of their game Saturday or they got "found out". These are great horses - particularly Windfall, who was the ONLY stallion to compete (unbelievably hard to keep their minds 'in the game' when they're also expected to breed), but anyone can have a bad day.
From the limited visibility available watching this online, neither Windfall nor Kim Severson's horse (BTW, this was NOT Winsome Adante; she was riding her 2nd mount: Royal Venture) seemed to be 'attacking' the course, which will cause problems @ Head of the Lake.
Attached are some photos from the rk3de.org website - of horses that had great xc rounds. Look @ the expressions on their faces and their 'body language' as they attack this section of the course.

I was at the birch jump which I believe was the first one they had trouble with. Several people had trouble at that jump but quite a few others handled it well. It wasn't a particularly large combination but was technical. It looked like they were coming to it strong but as they came around the corner it looked like he backed off a bit. Darren gave him a whack to get over it and he looked like he handled the ditch in between ok but Windfall basically said "no" at the last fence and Darren had to take him the long way around. Obviously, that's all I got to see of his ride but I was literally just a few feet away and in front for that combination. I'm sure it was disappointing as he dressage test was amazing.
It was a challenging course and there were quite a few retires but there were also a lot of riders who haven't done much at this level yet and several experienced riders who were bringing along horses. I thought a few of them were smart to retire before the horses lost some confidence.

Yep, I understand horses have to get experience, but not sure this is the one I'd try with a young horse (though to be fair, there truly aren't that many CCI**** available, so not a lot of other options if they're trying to see if their up-and-comer has what it takes to 'play w/the big boys').
One final photo to share. My first pick will always be Darren & W, but right behind them is Will Faudree (from Midland, TEXAS!), who finished 6th. Now we just need to get this boy on a Trakehner!

Actually, I didn't say young horses. What I said was bringing along horses. Several horses were attempting their first 4 star and several riders were attempting their first four star. Bound to be errors and confidence issues.

Young or not, it's a big challenge when you're bringing one along.

Agreed! So, how do we get Will, and some of these others, on Trakehners?

I wonder how many other warmbloods were at Rolex. Were all the others TBs? Steve +

I know there was a Selle Francais (spelling?) but that's the only one I know of. Several horses were TB crosses with the cross not identified.

I was lucky enough to get to go to Rolex - it is something else! Windfall and Darren's dressage ride was nothing short of magnificent! Sally O Connor (mother of David) did comentary in our tent. She was not free with any compliments for both days of dressage. She said these things of W and D "harmonious, now THAT is an extended trot!, beautiful, perfection!". The 8's and 9's just kept coming. I will never forget it. And the best part was when they left the ring...W had his head stretched out, walking beautifully, like "I am the man!". It was something to see!
Then, CC ate a lot of people's lunch. It was just one of those bad horse days - we all have them - I am just glad that mine are not in front of the entire horse world I believe it was 5 of the 7 top riders (mostly Olympians) that were knocked out by this course.
About the warmblood q - There were only three warmbloods.
What a great experience - I highly recommend it!
