I love Trakehners!
|
Hello,
I was just playing on the internet and came across this board. Thought it would be fun to chat with others and make some new friends. My name is Tia and I live in Norco, CA. I used to own a Trakehner when I was younger and havent had one in a very long time. I am now in the market to purchase another one. I have my eyes on a beautiful liver chestnut colt in Petaluma. I am awaiting a video of the young lad to see if I should make the 8 hour trip to meet him. So when I find the perfect one I will have much more to talk about. But for now I can play along.
Looking forward to all the fun. Thank you, Tia

Welcome to the forum, Tia, and an early welcome back to Trakehners!
You can post pix by clicking on the "additional options" link when you make a post, then browsing for your photo file and uploading it

Gee, Oakstable, I think she had one in mind that is in Petaluma...it didn't seem like she was just picking one because she thought it was closest....

Hey, who can argue with a Fan baby! I love my yearling by him. This colt looks terrific and appears to have "daddy's butt!" Best of luck with your boy. I hope that he works out for you.

How old is he? He looks to be about 5-6 months old?
Okay, here's picky: His throatlatch looks a little thick to me, and his neck is a bit heavy. He's very upright on his hooves. Normally I'd like to see the same angle as his shoulder, which has a nice slope to it. I'm not sure whether his knees are flat or not--doesn't look like it from this photo, but that could be just the photo. And he has too much weight on him for my taste. Other than those picky things, he looks like a very nice colt, is standing up very nicely, and seems very calm and attentive in the photo.
A couple of things I've learned over the years: 1) look at more than one horse, and 2) let your head rule, but don't throw out your heart.

So how do you like your Fandango baby disposition? How are they to deal with?
Ok, you asked.... My Fandango filly is out of an Enrico Caruso mare. She is smart, calm and has a strong desire to please. So far she has been a joy to be around except when she has to be stall bound due to heavy rain. About 2 days of that and she is "popping out all over." One thing that I will say about this cross is that there is no lack of brains in the mix. Jaci (Jacaranda) has always been friendly, smart and easy to teach new things.
My favorite story is when we had to move her at 6 weeks and she faced her first trip in a trailer. We loaded the mare into the trailer and also had a companion mare standing outside of the trailer for company. I walked the filly up to the step up a couple of times and she backed away. Then she just stood there looking at her mom for a moment.... thought about it and jumped right in. We quickly loaded the other mare behind her and were off on our short ride to her new pasture home. I liked the fact that there was no panic or hysteria..... just analysis and decision. I have always liked her calm mind. I will tell you however, that my filly has lived outside all of her life. Don't know how one would respond to confinement as I prefer to let the kids run as long as possible.
As for Fandango, he is doing great. I saw him a few weeks ago and he is maturing nicely and is getting ready for his show season this year. He will be at the dressage show at DG Bar in Hanford, CA next month and then return to eventing later in the summer. (Just in case you want to meet him in person!) Fandango, is well mannered, well handled and well ridden... it is a joy to watch!!

Well I just received the video of this little guy. In the picture I posted he was very young as they were registration pictures actually. He is now 1 yrs old. He looked to have a very pretty head in the video and floated when he trotted, he sure looks like he is going to be big. His neck and throatlatch didnt appear to be as large. He looked more like a chestnut than a liver chestnut, but thats ok. I am taking the video to my trainer to see what she says and then go from there. I have since looked at a few other horses. I have been looking at so many and talking to so many people, I forgot whos' who!
I wish I could post the video but its long and a huge file. I will keep you updated.....

I liked this colt the first time I saw him, and certainly like his sire, who's one of our younger stallions performing & doing well in his sport. You'll probably find he is liver chesnut, just bleached out right now.
What's his dam line and what are your future plans for him?
Enough questions for you?! Welcome back to Trakehners.

His Dam is Myrrha out of Penant (sire) and Maarsella (Dam) Penant out of Graditz*E* and Pillay
Mararsella out of Martini and Aami
this is the mess below I tried to copy and paste and it came out like that. But you get the idea. Rondo Graditz *E* Pennant Pasteur xx Pillau Piazza Dam:Myrrha Cocktail Martini Maranja Maarsella Amiego Aami Mystala (AA)
He would be a dressage mount, I train with Carly Davis in Norco, CA.
I hope he will be a liver chestnut though...
My trainer liked him on the video but mentioned he looked to be a bit toed in but it could be the video. Other than that she said I should make the 8 hour trip to visit him. hmmmmmmm
Has anyone ever bought a horse via video without ever meeting them? How'd that go? I wonder if I need to vet check him. The owner is a vet herself but he is a year old so maybe I should....
another concern I have is that I do not have a pasture for him to grow up in which would be ideal. any thoughts on that? Tia

When you list the sire and dam, its by (sire's name) and out of (dam's name). I used to own a full sister to Pennant, whom unfortunately passed away last summer. She was a very large, tall (17.0hh) mare that was dominant, but very affectionate. From the Graditz lines you get correct conformation, very typey and beautiful, and good movement. Martini has been one of the top dressage producing stallions in North America for many years. Graditz is a very close second to him in that respect. Martini babies are known to be very sweet and very easy to ride, a bit on the small side, but again very good movers. So with a combination of Graditz, Martini, and Fandango, you should definitely get above average movement, and a very attractive horse. Also, not everything can be seen from videos. If at all possible you should make the trip down to see him in person, even if you only get to spend an hour or so with him. Good luck with your search.

This is a big investment - MAKE THE TRIP TO SEE HIM since he's in the states.
I purchased both of our broodmares, Hennie *M* and Pr.St. Schoene Symphonie w/o seeing them in person . . . in fact, I hadn't seen video on either one when I wrote the check (sounds nuts, but anyone who's seen these mares knows we did not make a mistake w/either of these girls!).
This isn't as crazy as it sounds. Both were in Germany, and thre was no way for me to get away from work when they were available. I had photos, knew the bloodlines, was specifically looking for these mare lines, and had researched the production records of their dams, granddams and any sisters. Both were right for my stallion, so I asked trusted friends/advisors to see them & evaluate if they were as good as they looked on paper.
This worked out great for broodmares, but a future riding horse, regardless of where it was located - I'd have to try it for myself (unfortunatey, not an option in your case).
Good luck.

If I understand you correctly, that would be "Dam is Myrrha by Penant out of Maarsella. Penant is by Graditz*E* out of Pillay". You could even say "Dam is Myrrha by Penant/Graditz out of Maarsella" and never mention Pillay.
Has anyone ever bought a horse via video without ever meeting them? How'd that go? I wonder if I need to vet check him. The owner is a vet herself but he is a year old so maybe I should....
I've sold one young riding horse that way, and the buyer did not keep him. She was very happy with his movement, but his personality was a big stronger than she wished. She would have been better off to have come to see him in person.
another concern I have is that I do not have a pasture for him to grow up in which would be ideal. any thoughts on that? Tia
Find a place where you can pasture board him with other horses, ideally horses near his own age, but that's secondary to the pasture, IMO. I am a firm believer in letting horses grow up as horses, strengthen their bodies and bones by running around, and learn horse social life by mingling with a herd.
Alternatively, find an older horse that's ready to train.

Pardon me for harkening back to the size issue, but a post on this thread mentioned that the Martinis tend to be small. I've also read elsewhere on this forum that Feurtanzer (by Martini) produces size. Maybe there are just too many breeding variables for us to generalize too much. I invite your comments. Blessings, Steve Samples +

There are bloodlines that throw height and size, and those that do not. Martini was 16.3 hh, however his sire Coktail was 15.3 hh. In the earlier years of breeding to Martini a number of people did breed smaller mares to him expecting him to give his 16.3 hh's and improve on height. He didn't do that. So once word got out that he was indeed throwing back to Coktail (and not just for size either) he started to get some taller mares, and hence the offspring tended to be more in the normal 16.0 hh range. I also don't totally agree that Feuer is throwing height. I have seen a number of his foals, and they certainly are not on the "taller" side, but obviously with genetics, there are always variables. Martini was one of the best sires we had in the ATA, and his influence will continue to live on through his many sons and daughters in the ATA. Show records don't dispute that in any way.
