Everyone please keep my boy in your thoughts.  We've done the plasma transfer, antibiotics by iv, another round of antibiotics, this time orally with very new 3rd generation antibiotics.  It still has returned.  Although we can get it stopped, we cannot keep the diarrhea from returning.  Since day 2.5 he has only had 1 day without pepto, kao, etc.  It has returned again.  Waiting for the vet internist to call back.  May have to take him to the vet university hospital (have already been consulting with them and the university in FL)..

In spite of this he has gone from 126 lbs at birth to 186 lbs. at 3 1/2 weeks of age.  He is strong, very active, nursing well.  He has lots of teeth, eats a little hay, is friendly curious and my vet says "excessively bright".  When he is having an episode, he does grind his teeth, show signs of discomfort like stomping, shwishing his tail or holding it to one side, laying down right after nursing.  He has been wormed, he is on probiotics, he is on noni juice, he has had a round of ulcer guard. Dam was wormed within 8 hours of giving birth with Ivermectin Gold.  Vets are baffled.  If we take him to the hospital, he will probably run about 3 laps around the parking lot when we unload him.

Anyone else had experience with anything like this?

Thanks in advance,
Eileen

Prayers for your baby boy.  It's so frustrating when the little ones are sick, but his energy level & weight gain are good signs, so he's strong & fighting.

Sending prayers from TX  . . . get better little guy!   Kiss

Does he have a temp? We had a colt come in once for mom to be bred and he would eat dirt like a crazy. At home he was not doing it... It made him have water projectile diarreha. The only thing that stopped it was him going home. I was able to slow it using immodium but you have to be very careful you do not give to much. He never ran a temp. He had lots of energy. His mom gave lots of milk which could have been the problem except it would stop when she went home. The mare was being fed the same here as at home so change in food was not it either. We finally wrote it off to the dirt. Apparently we had something in our soil that he really liked.

Good luck. I hope you figure it out.

Have you had his diarrhea cultured ?  You need to have him tested for clostridium bacteria.  Normal antibiotics will not work on this one.  Metronidizole is the only antibiotic that will work.  Some colts with strong immune systems will fight it well, but still need a little help.  I had a colt on antibiotics, kaopectat, etc. for about 6 weeks before it cleared up.  I lost a mare from that infection, and had her orphan filly on the same meds as well.
Good luck !

Hi, all,
Thanks for all of your help both here and in private.  Just support helps.  And the ideas and suggestions are very helpful as well.  I will try to answer each one.

Shawnda -- He has had a round of metronidizole.  He is having his second fecal culture today as well as another bloodwork, just to make certain we didn't miss anything.

Pam -- His temp runs from 101 -102 depending upon the time of day.  Twice he has had 102.2 and 102.5 for very short periods ( like less than an hour).  He does eat everything -- nibbles on the trees (we have lots of them here), a little dirt, licks the fence, the walls of his stall, people, anything he can reach.  The mare does produce a ton of milk and I suspect it may be quite rich.  We are looking at her diet.  Maybe something is too rich.  She looks and acts fine, could stand to lose 100 lbs ( is a very easy keeper).

All---thanks for your thoughts and prayers.  I appreciate them.  Will keep you posted.

Thanks again, and if you have any more suggestions, please feel free to offer.  I will consider about anything.

Thanks,
Eileen

Thanks so much to all of you for all of your help and all the info.  Several have sent lots of info privately.  I can't tell you how much I have learned.

Baby now seems to be doing much better.  We have taken the mare off the alfalfa cubes ( we were using them because we had a drought and the hay was terrible).  He has just gotten better and better.  It will be a week tomorrow since the last boute of severe diarrhea and it is now a little over 24 hours since any medications.  Maybe her milk was just too rich with the alfalfa.  He seems absolutely normal so far.  Please keep your fingers crossed for us.  We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, again.  I would add a huge "YAHOO!!!", but I'm a little afraid it may be too soon to really celebrate.

Thank you all so very much.

YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has been nearly 2 weeks now since we took the mare off her tiny ration of alfalfa cubes as well as her soybean meal (also a small amount).  She now is getting beet pulp, a little rice bran, and her vitamins and minerals and her hay.  Colt is doing great.  Either it was the diet or a great coincidence.  He is fine.  No more episodes.

Thank you everyone for all of your emails, both here and privately.  I have learned a lot from all of you.

Thanks, again,
Eileen

Eileen,

Just a quick note.  I have had really good luck feeding Purina Strategy in the white bag which is formulated for breeding stock of all ages.  One scoop a day plus hay does nicely with 2 scoops (1AM-1PM) for nursing mares.  If a mare needs more calories, I add beet pulp and fortified rice bran, as you are.  Anyway, if it is available in your area, you might give it a try,

I am generally not a product promoter, but using Strategy significantly decreased the number of bins of special food that I had to store.  Made my life easier when I started using it.  I used to keep Senior, and Sweet Feed and Rice Bran and, and, and..... Now I just store Strategy and mixed hay pellets which I keep around for emergencies (like fire, flood, earthquake, etc. here in CA).

Glad to hear your boy is doing so much better.

If you're using any Purina feed, check for ethoxoquin, which they use as a preserrvative in some of their foods.  I don't know if they use it in equine feeds, but I know Purina was using it in their cat and dog feeds. This is a product developed by Monsanto chemical company to be used as a rubber hardener in tires. It is a proven carcinogenic and is not allowed in human food.
