I hear there were 2 stallions approved at the annual mtg - Kovington by Enrico Caruso & a 2 year old stallion owned by Leo Whinery - I heard Kovington was very nice - does anyone know anything about the other stallion???

I heard that these two were approved from a field of 7, and that the second stallion is an Abdullah son.  Kovington also tied for ATA year end Stallions in Hand with Paramoure, who is owned by forum member Heather Knutson and Aerron Smith.

Hopefully someone will return from the meeting and clue us all in!   Wink

The two approved stallions where Kovington by Enrico Caruso/Schwalbenherbst, owned by Kumi Smedley of Austin, TX, the other was Marshall by Abdullah/Samurai II, owned by Leo Whinery.
Kovington was a nice mover, not very typey, but a really  lovely horse with great suspension in his trot. He also seemed to be of calm temper. Only his free jumping was not so nice, as he got freaked out by too many spectators. I saw him pratice the day before and he did a good job, but when the "real" thing started, he simply got scared.
The Abdullah was a handsome grey with nice topline, one of the correctest Abdullah's I have ever seen. His movement didn't convince me, but he did a good job free jumping, although for his bloodlines, I would have liked to see more of the "wow" factor.
We'll see what these two will contribute in the future.
Please keep in mind this is my personal observation, the inspection committee might have something entirely esle to say. Read their comments in the next magazine issue.

There was a big crowd of mares inspected, also quite a number of TBs. One TB mare (with a stunning Stravinsky colt at side) scored 52 points, she is owned by Amie Fulks of Ocala, FL. A really nice broodmare type, with great body depth, excellent motherly type and very correct.
The Grand Champion mare of the mare show was, if I remember correctly, also by Enrico Caruso.
There was also a Sixtus colt up for approval, where it was suggested to the owners to put a show record on him and represent, as he was most athletic and could bring very important new traits to the breed in North America.

I would like to thank Jean and Erin for organizing this big meeting, I think they did a great job. There was so much work involved in this and besides, they presented 3 colts themselves and also a handful of mares. The stallion parade friday night was interesting, as we got to see horses we don't often see, like the approved Favian (by Justiz) and Sonset's Sieger (by Abdullah). The latter also put in a wonderful demonstration on jumping gymnastics for event horses on saturday, followed by Windfall (by Habicht), who once more impressed the crowds at xc.

The awards banquet on saturday night was a nice get-together for everybody. I presented the newly approved colts in NMS via video screens, which was followed by a big dinner. The big ATA awards were afterwards presented by Tim Holekamp. The winner of the ATA's Palmenblüte Award is the hunter Storyteller (aka the approved Heinzelmann by Bukephalos). The Ceasar Memorial Cup was given to Windfall, who is also the ATA's HOY in advanced eventing, just recently finishing 5th in a CCI*** (Fair Hill). The Trakehner Verband award was won by Leonidas, approved stallion by Condus, and the Trakehner Förderverein Award was given to- surprise, surprise- Windfall.
I forgot who won the König/NowPac Award for the best young rider in dressage, a $2000 cash prize, but I do remember that 3 kids where really tied in on this one, so that the ATA also gave away a $1000 second place and a $500 third place prize for this fild, which really shows at what high level Trakehners and young riders compete.
The Samurai II scholarship was won by young Canadian Andrina Calder on her incredible Herz Prinz (by Prinz Sokrates), with whom she also won HOY at prelim level and Darren Chiacchia won HOY at intermediate with the same horse.
The Engelhardt/Diehm Award, again a $2000 cash prize in combination with a trophy (a silver platter my grand father won on a Trakehner in 1934 in Insterbug), went out of the mare Herbstaster and her rider, who was the highest scoring young rider in 2002 aboard a Trakehner horse in eventing. I would like to thank the Diehms once more for becoming our partners here, their connection to the ATA was established around the sale of Windfall to the US and I think it's great they are still so very interested in Windfall's success in the new world and are contributing so much for young riders in eventing in NA.

Educational sessions included a lecture by Laura Wharton on her Grand Prix mount Pralat by Erzsand on the training of dressage horses through the various levels. Also, Jean Brinkmann demonstrated how to evaluate youngsters at different ages (weanling, yearlings and 2 year olds), Erin Brinkmann explained how to school  low and deep and Jessica and Sonset's Sieger performed over various jumps to demonstrate the gymnastics used for training event horses.

OK, I'm done for now, more later, Maren

PS: It was great to see you all again!!!

I agree with the suggestion to "re-present with a show record" the Sixtus son, Il Sixtino.  I looked at my video of him again and I see great movement (IMO), great Stallion Presence, and a refined and well put together horse.  Although, he was a little temperamental during the inspection (restless), I believe that he did remarkably well.

I think it would be a shame to geld him and sell him without attempting to get a "second opinion." Cry

Please remember that the above comments are my personal opinions only and that I am by no means an expert on Trakehners, conformation, or horses in general.  I based my opinions on the video and my personal observations of the horse at the FL inspection.

I did pick Kovington as my "1 of 2 to be approved."  I am quite proud of that one.  Grin

Maren' almost photographic memory has created an excellent summary of the annual meeting, and it is only to fill in the little dimples that I correct her about Laura Wharton's impressive gray FEI horse, whose name is Portraet, not Praelat (the deceased stallion by Herzbube).  The winner of the $2000 Koenig/NowPac Young Rider Dressage Prize is Erin Katona, of Fox Island, WA who rode the Eileen Poole-bred Zoltan MV (by Nemo) to phenomenal heights at third level and also led the nation (all ages, all breeds) in third level freestyle with a median score of nearly 72%.  She is presently in Germany training, with hopes of a NAYRC run on Zoltan next year.  You should hear how her family and trainer rave about Zoltan!
We in the ATA have a lot of folks to thank for our wonderfully expanded youth prizes, but the main benefactors are: Anna Calder, the German families Diehm and Engelhardt, Leo and Doris Whinery, Dr.Pat Luttgen, new-Board-member Sherry Tourino, and Brad Kerbs - all of whom made or have pledged major contributions.  I am so glad we have found ourselves united in supporting the cause of promoting youngsters competing on Trakehner horses!  This year the accomplishments of the top three dressage riders and top two event riders are just amazing.  You will read all about it in the magazine.
A special extra thanks to all the Brinkman family (Jean, Roy, Erin, Shannon, and all their helpers) for a great venue for our meeting.

I want to add a big thank-you to the ATA and Valhalla Farm.  I know it cannot be easy to organize such an event, but bravo to all!  The educational sessions were a nice addition - how exciting to see Darren ride Windfall, Laura ride her fabulous dressage horses, and what a great opportunity to see the important Mahagoni bloodline presentation.  I enjoyed finally meeting everyone who I've only heard or read about, and especially those that I've conversed with through email.  And to have participants from as far away as California speaks well of the ATA members and Trakehner fans.  I look forward to next year's meeting in Seattle and hope everyone will mark 2005 in their calendars for Houston!  -Kumi

Just to set the record straight:  Laura Wharton's Grand Prix mount is Portrat.  And he is stunning, as everyone saw at the ATA exhibition!!!
I love this forum!  Keep up the interesting discussions.  I am learning so much, and will be using all this information in my search for my first Trak!
