I love my Trakehner!
|
My baby will be three in March, and I have been getting on her once every couple of weeks and just walking her around for no more than 5 or 10 minutes. She does not have a saddle on, nor a bridle (Just her halter and two leads). I am not a big person (120lbs), but I don't want to put too much weight or strain on her. Is this ok to do? Thanks and happy holiday's everyone!

Go, Bellinger, Go!

We start ours at the end of their 2/beginning of their 3 year old year, and then chuck them back out to pasture until the end of their 3 year old year.
There's plenty of things you can do with them first, if you're worried about the weight. Does she lunge? Long line? Trot over ground poles on the lunge?
I think you're very brave for breaking your baby in a halter and leads!

Wendi, I think that's a great way to start riding a baby! Having done much of both my horses' early education bareback, I totally believe in it. I wouldn't do much more than what you're doing now until late next summer, but that doesn't mean that you can't start doing stuff like turn on the forehand, sidepass, and such in baby steps and with lots of positive reinforcement. Also, taking her to shows or other events to hang out and graze - perhaps a few halter classes. Do you have a horse to pony her from? Is she accustomed to leaving her buddies for walks down the trail? Getting a horse to be relaxed about going out alone with you is (I think) pretty important. Can you imagine an eventer that won't go out on course without his pal? Anyhow, have fun, and good luck.

I love my Trakehner!

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses. Let me say that I would NEVER have gotten on my filly if I didn't feel she would allow me. I have had her since she was almost 6 months old, so we have a pretty good bond. I just want to keep things simple and enjoyable for her (and myself). Right now, she is very easy to catch in the field, I don't want her to to resent "work" and become difficult to catch.
Guess I am a softie, I would rather my horse work for me because she loves me, than force her (although you really can't force a trakehner to do anything). It should be interesting when I put a saddle on her next year. Thanks again, and be blessed!
