A long time friend/client contacted me yesterday with some VERY sad news...On Oct 4th around feeding time 33 horses perished in a horrible fire at Epona Farm in Elburn, IL. Some of you from the mid-west may know of someone also that lost their horse(s), as my friend lost 2 of her horses (Jenni & Max), and I believe a couple horses from Rolling Oaks Farm perished too.
I've attached a wonderful tribute written by Epona's farm vet that was sent to me by my friend. On Sunday (tomorrow) Epona Farm will hold a Memorial for those horses that perished in the fire. Please keep these owners and their beloved animals in your thoughts and prayers...
Thank you.

Also, I forgot to mention in my post that an investigation is being conducted as to why the fire started but to date there is no explanation...

Horrible. Those poor owners . . . My eyes welled with tears reading the vet's tribute.

What a terrible, terrible loss.
I read a news story online about the fire and it appears that there is a lot of community support for Dora, the owner of the barn. The one bright lining to tragedies such as these is seeing how horse people can pull together.
Best wishes and sympathies to all who lost horses in the fire.

I received an email from my friend today describing how beautiful the memorial was at Epona Farm...I have attached this portion of her email.
At the end of Marti's email she said: "Everyone is commited to the rebuilding of Epona Farm and filling it up with lots of new friends"
Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers...

Epona is (was) only a few miles from me. I knew many of the horses (and their people) who perished. I was present for the memorial service, and it was tasteful, kind and very tearful. It was a great loss to the local community. The only Trakehner lost was Degas (by Impressionist out of Danke by Butow). He was much loved, and will be dearly missed. Everyone should do a serious audit of their barns and search for any fire hazards. This stuff is way to serious to just say, "oh, it can't possibly happen to me." Yes, it can.
Though the investigation into this incident has not yet been completed, there are a few questions that will need to be answered before "we locals" will be able to put it to rest.
Please, everyone, be very watchful of your barns, and do everything you can to make your horses as safe as you possibly can. There is no such thing as 'wasted effort' in this direction.

I received a flyer from my friend today with photos of Epona Farm and it looked to be a lovely, peaceful facility. My friend said the boarders were all very close and she made many friends at Epona while she boarded her horses there.
As an owner of a small private breeding facility, I have the advantage of knowing what goes on with regards to maintenance around my place and I try not to take ANYTHING for granted. However, in a larger facility it is harder to keep track of situations that may or may not occur; therefore, ongoing maintenence is important and surely the owner of Epona was aware of this.
I'm glad as well as others in the horse community that an ongoing investation is being conducted so that not only the "local" horse community but the "entire" horse community can have some sort of resolution about this terrible tragedy and then put it to rest...

How horrible!!! I hate hearing/reading about tragedies like this!!! My thoughts and prayers are with those owners/horses etc!
Does anyone knew the name of the person that had the Impressionist bred colt that died? (Degas)

Unfortunately, according to the owner of Epona she believes there were actually 3 Trakehners lost in the fire. There names were Dia, Diva and Degas
She believes that Dia was a barn name and was also from Rolling Oaks. At this time, I don't know who owned Diva or Dia.
