I have a broodmare that I am thinking to place in a good home. I want her to go to Trak breeder, and the home must be an approved, permanent situation. I will not allow her to fall into a bad situation, and so she is welcome to remain with me if the right home is not found.
She is a proven producer, OSB, Tizian/Ibikus, 15yrs, 17.0H, bay sabino.
She is not an 'easy breeder' but is definitely breedable. She has produced 3 fine, healthy, beautiful foals, the last one born in '04. The only reason that I am not using her this year is that she does not cycle well until July through October. All of her foals have been born in July/August. I don't want to breed in the fall! She is kind and sweet, the very best mom, very beautiful, but not sound due to an old founder. She does very well in a herd situation, and is an easy keeper, requiring no special maintenance.
It is a shame that this great mare is going to stand -unused- in my back pasture when she should be used for breeding. If someone is interested in her, please call me for more information. Suzette 630-365-4423

Suzette: I am so glad to know you found your mare a perfect situation. I wish Amanya the very best with her new friend and that she does, in fact, have many more beautiful foals...

Thank you Suzette for this super opportunity to have this lovely lovely mare. We are so excited !
She and Kasserine will have many good days, swapping baby stories as their respective "kids" frolic together under the oak trees in our pasture.
Of course we expect visits ! Suzette HAS to come out now, without a doubt; and all you other other Trakehner owners/lovers have a standing invitation to our little ranch tucked in the foothills of the Sierras.

I'm pretty naive, but I would like to think/hope that the MAJORITY of us breeders would have done the proper thing and contacted Suzette first, and if she had not been in a position to take her back, then offer her for cost of shipping or free.... It boggles my mind what people do sometimes. I don't know about others but I do keep a tally of certain things and this type of situation is one of them.
I'm sorry Suzette! Has this individual contacted you since this thread was reopened about taking her back? or seeing if you knew of a home for her?

Just a question (and Suzette you can PM me if you would rather not say in "public")... but is Amanya the person that is selling this mare? Or did she change hands after Suzette gave her to Amanya? Either way it is pretty sad - esp since I remember calling about this mare and talking at length to Suzette about taking her. I remember vividly Suzette talking to me about how she wanted her to go to a home that would keep her, that she understood that no one knew what tomorrow would bring but that she wanted a "forever" type home for her and that she was very concerned about where this mare went etc. I think I was axed because I didn't have enough pasture for her and there were so many others that had the pasture space etc...

Must be a different person since Amanya was in California and this seller is in New Mexico. If there is a bright side to this, it is that, at least, she is asking a good chunk of money and hopefully the mare is not going to end up badly.

Has anyone thought of contacting this person to find out if this is the first time the horse has been offered for sale? If not, then I would remind the person that a horse freely given with the idea it would have a permanent home should be offered to the original giver. If the current owner bought the horse, she should at least be made aware of the history, for the mare's sake as well as her own.

I do think that someone should email the current owner (or seller) of the horse. As for contracts etc - I think that some of us (Suzette, myself, and prob others of us out there) rightly or wrongly hope/believe that esp with such a small breed as we are that a specific contract on a "free" or reduced rate mare is not needed. I have done several verbal contracts over the past couple of years - and haven't had anything specifying any particular conditions in writing. I guess we all need to relook at that practice. Such a shame. Although even horses with strong written contracts aren't guaranteed what happens to them.

Suzette - I am much like you in having faith that others will make decisions like me....unfortunately that is not always the case. A big beautiful broodmare will always be valued and as such looks like dollar signs to some. Even if Amanya gave her away thinking, like you, that she was placing her in a forever home, she should have contacted you at the very least. I would definitely call the current owner to find out what the story is. Someone has certainly taken advantage of someone in this situation. Let us know what you hear!

Suzette, if you talk to the your old mare's sellers, please let us know how it went. I know if and old horse of mine turned up like that, I'd be in touch with the current owners to at least find out exactly how the horse is doing. I know the right thing was not done by you, but we can at least hope that the right thing was done for the horse . . . . .
