Schwaermer information
« on: October 08, 2002, 11:37:27 AM »

Could anyone provide me with information about the stallion Schaermer?  He was by Maharadscha and that's about all I know about him.  Any info about his performance record or that of his offspring?  What did he look like?  Did he have a refining influence on his offspring or did he add substance?  What about his temperament?  Any information will be appreciated!  TIA!

Schwärmer was a dark bay son of Maharadscha out of the legendary mare Schwalbe by Totilas. Totilas was a son of Pythagoras, still born at Trakehnen and had survived the treck to West Germny, where he was most influencial in establishing a borad base for the new Trakehner breed after the war. Schwalbe was one of his most prominent daughters, her family is very prominent today and offspring can be found in all major horse disciples. Her daughter Schwarze Schwalbe (by Traumgeist xx) established a branch of her own.
The family is most dominant in Otto Langels' Hämelschenburg stud in Germany today and such stallions as Schwarm, Schwalbenzug,-flug and -freund were prominent sires of their time. This line was successfully crossed with Impuls and Ibikus, again at Langels' farm, resulting in such outstanding mares like Schwalbenzeit and  Schwalbenburg (dam of the approved stallions Sans Souci, Schwadroneur, Stradivari and Showmaster).

Schwärmer was born in 1970, bred at the famous Rantzau Trakehner stud. He passed his stallion perfromance test at Westercelle in 1973 and was a breeding stallion for 16 years. He had two approved sons and 24 of his daughters are registered in the main stud book. He died in 1988.
His most famous daughter is the mare Cinderella, she is the dam of the Olendburg approved stallion Day Dream, a stunning black Donnerhall son, who is one of Germany's most popular sire today. His kids win at highest levels in dressage as he did himself. You should be able to find a picture of him when you do a www-search for Day Dream, he is quite a sight!!

Actually, Maren, I'm interested in Day Dream for my Oldenburg mare next year!  (That's why I posted this question!!!) My mare could use some refinement, and that's part of the reason I'm considering Day Dream.  I'm also considering a Rubenstein stallion who is out of a Karon mare.

Oops,  what a coincidence!
Well, since you're looking for refinement, why not go all Trakehner??? So many Oldenburg breeders do that. Take a look at the exciting stallion Mon Dieu at Vorwerk, he is by Michelangelo-Donnerhall-Pik Bube, a premium stallion at the last Oldenburg approvals. Michelangelo is approved for all German warmblood associations except Holstein, and he would bring in the best dressage blood available today, as he is a half brother to Mahagoni (both by Pasteur xx). We see many Hannovarians here with Michel blood, and gee, they can move AND look beautiful.
I'd take a serious look at him. Maybe even Mon Dieu himself, if you don't want to go pure Trakehner.

What's your mare's breeding?

She's by Parabol out of a race-bred TB mare that was a bit on the coarse side.  Parabol is by Paradox I out of a Waldschuetz mare.  He was champion of his perfomance testing in 1986 and is approved Oldenburg, Westphalian, Hannoverian in Germany and also ISR and American Han. in the US.  In 1987 he was "Champion of Oldenburg".  He competed successfully in "Style Jumping" and in the US was trainded to Grand Prix dressage.  He's really an all-arounder, which I think my mare could be, too.  I posted a "request for breeding suggestions" on the new warmblood forum and have gotten some good feed back.  Day Dream was one I'd been thinking about prior to that posting.

My mare could use a bit of refinement.  She's a bit longish in the back and I'd like a bit better neck position.  So those are the things I'd like most to improve upon.  She has the best temperament, I think she's a honey!

I definitiely will check into Michelangelo and Mon Dieu, too.

Interested in a nice story about Schwärmer??
When he was a two-year-old at stud rantzau, the selection team did not take him for Neumünster grading, because they critized his lack in stallion presence, his too heavy and too deep set on neck. But Dr.Schilke, the mentor of the breed -"this old fox" as we say in German - believed in him, certainly because of his outstanding bloodlines. And several weeks after Neumünster he was successful to convince the grading commission to go to Rantzau, having a second look on Schwärmer and they graded him there. That was possible in those years but shows too, that - sometimes - genes and outstanding parents are more important, than only conformation and goodlooking.Experienced, old horsepeople told us how it goes................
