I'm confused (imagine that). Why is it that some posts on this forum show up as "new" that have older dates than some that are more recent? There, I've displayed my ignorance to the world!

They show up as "new" for you only, if you haven't looked at a recent post that has been added to the thread. In other words, the thread/topic may be old, but there has been an individual post that you haven't read.
