Pretty interesting crop. Dominant mare sires are certainly Kostolany and Arogno. There was a black son of Sapros out of elite mare Miami by Matador presented, but apparently not selected. I would have loved to see that one (right, Tim?)
12 sons of Münchhausen were presented at the selections!! 9 of Friedensfürst and Buddenbrock. 5 by Sixtus (with one colt selected for the spring approval), 4 by Induc, Sapros, , Preussenprinz, Polarpunkt, Opernball and Biotop. 3 by Oxford, Monteverdi, Maizauber, Hohenstein and Angard. The two sons of Caprimond, Schampus and Beg xx were not accepted. Something really disturbing is the lack of half TB colts, only 1 is presented by Webelsgrund this year (Tenor x Motely xx), we always had about 7-10 in the past years. On the one hand, the breed masters ask the breeders to cross in quality TB, but if they do, the producs are not valued as high as they should. And if you take a close look at the variety of bloodlines through the sires, there is almost no variance anymore, they are all in oneway or the other, related. Pretty scary development!!
But this selection will be an interesting one to watch. Lara, Jim, Christine, Sheryl: I can't wait for you guys to come and this this!!!!
Best wishes to all, Maren

There were only a couple of half TB stallions nominated in the first place and obviously the quality wasn't there. But they are selling quite a few half TB/Arab foals in the elite ring this year. If you look at the dam's generation, you will find a lot of TB there, plus Arogno, Mahagoni and Consul are 50% TB too. We can never have enough TB, that's for sure, especially not with a closed stud book. Additionally, they are often the much better jumpers.
It's good to see that some of the Russians are finally getting into the game (Biotop, Sapros, the Topki-son Schenkendorf), and Friedensfürst represents a stallion line that practically didn't exist anymore in Germany after Graditz was sold. We'll see what they can make of it....

I LOVE Trakehners!

Have to agree with you about the disappointing lack of TB blood (which I am trying to contribute towards correcting - see breeding post!!) Personally I think the problem is also of getting the right type of TBs and the right bloodlines are crucial to provide the power, and get movement upwards, not just forwards fast. Personally I prefer jumping TB lines (only MHO!)
Also was not very impressed with a lot of the photos - compared to previous years a lot of them don't seem very flattering to the colts.
Some of them look outstanding on blood though and I have heard some really wonderful. As for the foals - Oh to win the lottery before the auction!!!!!

I am one of those trakehner breeders who believe that we should make sure we never forget the trakehner is a heavy breed and I believe it has gotten a little to lite, I am also looking for Information on any babies out of a stallion called Kaspieriet specifically any out of one his foals Libikus who was a stallion with the Canadian Trakhner horse Society and then he was gelded, my familly used to own Libikus and we know the where abouts of several of his foals but are trying to track down any others of his get?
Any information would be greatly appreated, Libikus dam was Libby a purebred trakhner both kaspieret and Libby where owned by the same person who bred Libikus and then Libikus was sold to my parents in alaska but now he is in canada and is a Dressage horse and was gelded.
Sincerly,
Adrianna

I don't have any specific information on Libikus or his offspring but Ingrid, who is in charge of this site, has bred several outstanding Kaspareit foals www.Atrakehner.com
We have also bred several Kaspareit offspring at our farm and stand his approved stallion Paramoure. www.Sovereignhorses.com
Good luck with your search!!

I disagree with Adrianna about Trakehners being heavy. Not once in history was the Trakehner bred for substance, although we had times in the early 20th century, where the breed was almost more TB than Trak. But as a fact, the Trakehner is the most refined warmblood in the world, and very narrow in its lines since the geenpool was restricted after the second WW. Therefore, it is vital and most essential for our breed to bring in outside blood, which can only be achieved through Arabs and TBs. They mark the true improvement in the breed. The most influencial stallions in the past (regarding offspring AND competiting horses), were Argono (out of a TB mare), Mahagoni (by TB sire), Consul (by TB sire) and Habicht (by Arab sire). Ibikus comes from a TB line (Pindar xx). And especially the stallion Kaspareit produced most successfully with TB mares. I wish he would have had a chance with European TB mares (e.g. the one Tamsin on this forum owns!). Her mare is the perfect example of the modern Trakehner horse, with great suspension, unbelievable knee action, all coming from very powerful haunches, she is elegant, yet not light, VERY typey, all in all, just perfect to me. That's where we need to aim. The only "heavy" family that really made it up to today was the Handschelle family (Trakehnen), that really produced best with blood (Habicht). The list of colts in NMS this year scares me so much, because I miss genetic variances. The lines of Faneur and Mahagoni are omnipresent, Habicht is slowly coming in too, but Ibikus is basically lost (if it wasn't for Banditentraum), same is true for Impuls (whose only representative is the Suchard colt), new TB lines are totally absent. Ibikus and Impuls certainly carry weight through their daughters, but all in all, we're witnessing a restriction of the gene pool, and that only means trouble in the long run.

Do the Europeans ever import TB colts from the USA? A friend of mine has a weanling bay colt that is absolutely stunning. He will be tall and elegant, very leggy, and has the best of American racehorse breeding. The dam is a daughter of Skywalker, who won more than one million dollars. The mother also raised successfully for a number of years. I'd have to research how much she won. The sire is a son of Damascus, Horse of the Year in the USA, and the paternal dam line is all successful black type mares in the closeup generations. I read somewhere that Dr. Christmann of Hanover said it was hard to find a really nice TB like Lauries Crusader. I think my friend's colt is worth looking at it someone would consider a colt in California.
