Itaka had to go to CSU this evening and just got the call that they need to do surgery.
I hate the C word. Just needed to cheer up a little.

Well it's been a long sleep deprived night...
She got out of surgery and is recovering well.
It was sand colic. Ironically, we had just finished a 2 week protocol of Sand Clear. 
The surgeon said that they made a small incision to remove the sand and the food behind it. This morning they tubed her to remove any stomach food.
He said she is a feisty girl and is already up, moving around, and rooting for her food. 
If all goes well, home on Tuesday and back on regular diet in about 2 weeks. Of course, stall rest for the incision.
Luckily I had just enrolled her on the ContinuCare program a month ago.
Jingles for a speedy recovery. Special thanks to Terri and John who caught it fast and gave immediate communication to me and the vet.

So glad to hear she is recovering well!  What a scare...
We live in a sandy area (read, 100% sandy soil on our farm), and have found that feeding flax seed every day seems to be greatly reducing the amount of sand the horses have in their guts. I base that on the vet ausculating horses here in the last 7 years for whatever reasons (illness, physical exam, prepurchases). When we were on the monthly-purge program with psyllium (Sandclear and other products), he invariably said that he could hear the horse had sand. Since we started feeding daily flax three years ago, there have been no such findings. Anecdotal, but....
We don't even feed psyllium anymore, and I see that Uckele Animal Health now carries a flax (labelled linseed) preparation as a psyllium alternative. Feeding flax seeds (about 4 ounces per day) has the added benefits of improving the coat condition, adding essential fatty acids to the diet, and being cheaper than the monthly course of psyllium. It might be something to try.

Sadly flax was not enough in this case. She has been on daily flax since she arrived in CO and also soaked beet pulp.
She must be one of those who retains it. Anyway, we will work through her feeding program once she is back and ready for regular feed again.
I am a big fan of flax as well.

Update from the vet...Katy is doing quite well. They are up to 1 flake of hay every 6 hours and she should go home tomorrow if all goes well.
Good news is I might be able to visit her in August. 
I am thrilled with how fast she bounced back. Can't say enough about Terri & John who are so observant of the herd. They caught it lightening fast! Everyone hug your Barn Owner, Manager, or yourself if you watch your own herd. Their quick action keeps our horses safe.

She had to go back to CSU. Blood work came back normal, but she was in a lot of pain. They put the meds back on and will wean her off slower this time.
 Come on girl...jingle.

OK thought I'd add an update since Katie is at my place. I've already had a long talk with her cause I sure am tired of going to CSU. She came home once again on Sunday. Doctors really didn't have a reason but I do believe it was the heat, combined with pain and being trapped in a stall for the first time in her life. Quite a bit of stress for a youngster. She is doing well and looked happy and bright this morning. Of course she should be, she is the only horse in the barn with her own personal swamp cooler. For those of you who have never heard of a swamp cooler, particularly those who live in humid climates think low power A/C
She has a buddy in the stall next door and using a portable panel we have made a small area where she can go outside and look around. Interestingly enough, yesterday with the cooler going during our 98-degree day I rarely caught her (or her buddy for the day) outside. We will be keeping a close eye on her but already I see a marked improvement from the first time she arrived home. Of course now comes the problem of hand walking a youngster twice a day for the next 6 weeks. I’m sure with each passing day the energy level will increase. Ahh, how I love hand walking (NOT!!!!). So everyone keep up the positive energy!!!

Glad to hear she is doing better, Terri & Melissa.
I had to do hand-walking and I don't think I have ever done such a dangerous thing with a horse. The patient becomes firmly convinced that there is not a bloody thing wrong with IT, and that you should want to run and buck and play as much as it does.... Good luck with that!

You'll be able to notice me from afar, the right arm will be two feet longer then the left
Been down that hand walking path before and it ain't purty.
Feel free to send any suggestions that might help take the edge off but this is a yearling filly and I know it's going to be a challenge

Glad to hear your horse is better! I've been through the hand-walking thing, too, and it stinks. My normally quiet horse was like a raging bull.  A buddy should help the horse's stress level quite a bit, but I'd cut the calories to the bare minimum, and try to supply them from as much fat and as little sugar/carb stuff as possible. I also usually advise feeding only mediocre grass hay, and as much as the horse will eat in order to keep them busy for the maximum amount of time.
