Life is Choices
|
From time to time, I see postings from upset Trak owners who have just had a “bad conversation” with someone who has a negative opinion of this breed.
I thought I’d relay my recent positive experiences as people meet my Trakehners for the first time.
Moving to the foothills of the Sierra Mountains, while keeping me in range of some major dressage facilities, also has plunked me into the middle of cattle and mountain country. Most folks here ride Western, and the horse of choice is Quarter or Appy.
My new friends and neighbors are fascinated by my “huge” Trakehners. (My mare is 16.1…) Now I’m not just talking about people with a horse in their backyard. One is a judge and trainer; another Appy lover who competed for years around LA; a third worked cattle w/ quarter horses for several decades. These folks know horses in general quite well.
So my mare, by Templeritter (Condus) out of K-Pasa by Kaspariet, and my gelding, by Happy Hour out of my mare, have won a lot of people’s hearts. When I ride, they come by to watch (and I’m not that good, tho I have great fun with my mare.) They see how honest and sweet and willing my mare is. They see how happy she is to work with me. They see the love-affair.
Then, as I’ve had some of them help me with feedings when I’m gone, they have also handled my coming 3-yr old gelding. And each and every one of them has fallen in love with him and simply adore him. He’s a lover and smart as a whip and has incredible gaits (yeah, yeah, I know, I’m a bit prejudiced, but as “Mom” I’m allowed !)
Two of my new friends would even like to own Trakehners “if they are as nice as yours.” I assure them that they are and that we Trak owners are not just horse lovers, but Trak fanatics! We just can't help loving them!
When no “bad press” has reached their ears, it’s easy for unbiased horse people to appreciate our breed.
So when I opened my ATA Newsletter today and read Julie Baxley’s article on “Enhancing Our Image is Everybody’s Business” was particularly relevant.
Even dressage friends in our local CDS chapter are taking second and third looks at my “Kids.” Most here aren’t familiar w/ Trak’s. They are impressed with both the temperament and the intelligence. I thank them kindly for their compliments, maybe chat with them a while about my horses (and always ask about theirs so it’s not a one-sided conversation.) But I never brag. I don’t need to. My horses are nice, and so I also try to be. After all, the proof is in the pudding, so when they see how we do in the future, that’s what will really count.
Just wanted to share with you guys.
