Actually that is the question. I would like to start ridding again, I'm 52. I worked on a ranch when I was in my late teens and early 20's and have ridden occasionally since I quit "cowboying". I learned to ride in rough country on a mixed bag of horse flesh. I'm not sure what that means except that I can stay aboard most anything and know very little about equitation.
I do know that I want to learn to ride english, which means to me I'd like to become part of the horse I'm ridding and doubt I'll have any need to rope anything so I won't need a saddle horn.
So, why am I here? The pictures I've seen of Trakehner's have ... well just captured my heart. I've never seen anything move so beautifully even when their standing still. I'd love to own one but in my part of the world there aren't allot of breeders. I want a quality animal, but have no intrest in showing or competing. The country I "grew up in" is big and I had to cover allot of ground everyday. So, I still want a good mover with lots of heart (right place, hunh?). Anyway this is getting long for no reason, how do I get started finding my horse. Thanks.
Your best bet is to find a local instructor - preferably in dressage or hunt seat (or both - what is your new focus going to be, or haven't you decided?) who can help you start learning to get all your parts and pieces where they belong and in sync while you go about finding your dream horse. I think you'll be very pleased with a Trak. They tend to be very willing horses. To go about finding one you like, go to the American Trakehner Assn web page and you can go through the sales list - or to the lists of breeders. Some of them have sales horses that are not on the ATA sales list - Knot-E-Nuf Acres being one that I reccommend you look at.
Best wishes with re-learning to ride and with finding the 'perfect horse.'
hi so you aren't sure if you can ride a trakehner with a cowboying methode? (sorry for my english ) or what? you don't have to ride english... i know a man who rides his trakehner horses western...he loves colored trakehners.
