Pr. St. Schoene Symphonie delivered a liver chesnut colt with a huge, heart-shaped star on his forehead and two white hind socks.
He was trying to get up before his legs were out of mom and once he made it up, hasn't been back down since. This is one big, strong colt so of course his stable name's already been chosen: Sampson (Sam for short)! 
Photos as soon as we can get them developed.

Congratulations! He sounds wonderful! By the way, I love the name Sampson.  I don't have a baby coming this year and can't wait to see pictures of everyone elses.

Yes, he's a moose. Poor Sym, he really needs to get her something special for mothers day! We'll hopefully get some sleep after tonight; it looks like Hennie's going to have hers any time now so hopefully I can just go 48 hrs. w/little or no sleep and catch up on the weekend.
Think happy Hennie thoughts!

Yes, so far only boys for Taz. (I think it's part of his 'master plan' . . . if only boys, then every mare on the place is still a potential "dance partner" for him.)
As you can tell from the time this is posted, we're on foal watch again tonight. Hennie's ready to go any time (which means she'll probably make me wait at least one more night . . .why should I be comfortable when she's so fat?!)

The chesnut color is probably via Taz - I was willing to ascribe Herzmond's color ('04 foal) to Hennie, since she has two chesnut sisters, but I don't think it runs in Sym's family.
Taz's grandsire (Rondo) was chesnut and sired at least one approved son in Germany (E.H. Friedensfeurst) of this color. Graditz had several chesnut offspring, including the ATA-approved stallion, Donnerkeil. Interestingly, the chesnuts from that line tend to be tall - and Sam looks like he's no exception. We'll see . . . genetics re: color genes confound me!

Chestnut is actually recessive, so you can only get it if both parents carry the allele. Breeding to a chestnut stallion, for example, guarantees that the foal will get one chestnut allele. If the dam contributes a chestnut allele as well (even if she is NOT chestnut herself, but carries the allele) then you will get a chestnut foal. Chestnut effectively masks the rest of the base color genes.
So:
- chestnut x chestnut = chestnut 100% of the time
- chestnut x non-chestnut but chestnut carrier = chestnut 50% of the time, and non-chestnut but chestnut carrier 50% of the time
- non-chestnut but chestnut carrier x non-chestnut but chestnut carrier = chestnut 25% of the time (and non-chestnut non-carrier 25%, and non-chestnut but chestnut carrier 50%)
- chestnut x non-chestnut non-carrier = non-chestnut but chestnut carrier 100% of the time
- non-chestnut non-carrier x non-chestnut non-carrier = non-chestnut non-carrier 100% of the time
So Symphonie definitely carries the chestnut allele. Given the number of chestnut horses, and the fact that it's expression is recessive, one could assume that most horses in fact carry one chestnut allele (or two, obviously, if they are chestnut themselves!)
