I have been taking lessons on my coming six year old Trakehner mare Holly for a few months now, and decided on Friday to test her free-jumping ability a little. My aim was to see how high she could "easily" jump before showing any effort. I set up a really poor jump shoot, because we just didn't seem to have many standards in the arena, and the indoor is huge, so Holly could easily have evaded the chute. I did have one helper, the barn manager. HOLLY LOVED IT! I started with a small cross-rail, about 2', about the height we are currently jumping in lessons. I slowly increased the height, until we had the rails set at 3'9"! Holly just sailed right over them, great form too! Her knees looked perfect and I cannot describe how HAPPY she looked! My fiance Andy used his camera phone to get a little video footage. If anyone is interested, please email me (you'll need Quicken to open it)!
I never would have thought that any horse could enjoy jumping so much! I mean, we had a REALLY poor chute set up, but Holly sought out the jump every time, even from the side where there was no chute! I only asked Holly to jump about a dozen times, but I bet she would have kept it up all day! The barn manager thought that Holly would have jumped whatever height we set the standards at...and they were 6' standards! Our trainer is always complaining that none of the horses at the barn have Grand Prix potential...I think I'll just let him be surprised!
Now...the problem is that I am scared to jump anything over two feet high...

Congratulations; some of them just love to jump! Mares quite often excel at jumping (maybe it's that 'female thing' about being careful
