I love Trakehners!
|
Hello, everyone. I am pleased to have this board for the many questions I have now! I have just purchased an aged Trakenher mare, Savana, by Mozart, out of Schlobitten, by Malachit. She is 23 this spring, and I am hoping to get ONE more nice foal out of her! I currently also have 4 thoroughbred mares, 2 of whom I plan on keeping and taking through the approval process, hopefully in Fall '05. I am most likely going to sell or lease the other two. Unfortunately, they are not dressage type, and I can only concentrate on so many things. To have them at a disadvantage (for me) from the start...well, I can't say it would be a good idea to start a strong program. My new mare is pretty "heavy". I understahnd this is a strong foundation type characteristic? I would like a teeny bit more refinement, particularly about the head. I would love to hear stallion suggestions. I am working on figuring out how to post photos. In the meantime, I am working on getting her on my weabite asap... Thanks, and I hope to "meet" everyone. PS, I am located in NW Illinois.

Joie,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Trakehners! Not having seen your mare, I am just going to throw a suggestion your way.
A friend of mine had a well built mare (who used to be mine) who was a little old style who needed more shoulder freedom and she bred her to Stiletto and WOW! Talk about movement and refinement.
For me, I purchased a gelding for my own personal riding and he is by Advocate. I liked his movement and refinement so much that I also purchased a filly just this past year. Both the gelding and the filly are in the last issue of the ATA magazine (Avant Garde & Itaka).
Those are just 2 of my favorites, but I have many others. Post a picture so we can see your mare.
Also, Advocate is near you in Huntington, IN.

Welcome Joie! Without knowing anything about your mare other than what you've said I'll just tell you my personal favorites...
I breed my mare to Impressionist because he is the best match for her. He throws great heads/necks and temperaments on his foals. As does HIS daddy, Hailo!
Stiletto is great for the right mares and throws wonderful movement.
Love Advocate. Also liked Ichi Ban. I like Feuertanzer, but he still needs to complete his performance so he isn't completly approved yet so if you want a stud that is approved he won't work (yet hopefully!).
I like the photos of Tanzeln, but haven't seen him move yet (only seen photos...). Same with Tizgane.
I like Onasiss and his foals are always really nice from what I've seen.
The other stud that I really like is Emeer - I have only seen his photos and a video of him also, but I was at DAD with Carol and some of his "kids" and they were all BIG and had great temperaments/movement and were elegant.
If you are able to (and I know that it is a long way for you) try and come to the convention - Pam is doing a great job organizing the stallion parade etc and several of the studs that I mentioned will be there (would be a great way to not only meet fellow TK lovers, but also see the prospective daddies in person). Welcome, Joie! Congratulations on your new Trakehner. I think I know this mare.. is her name Savana, imported in the 80s? I have a very similar mare by Mozart out of a Pregelstrand mare. We had a very successful cross with EH Herzzauber. Also have a look at Oskar II. Others who come to mind are Incantare, Tanzeln (premium EC son, nice walk!!!), High Knight (1/2 tb to refine her and lengthen her legs), Illux (coming from Europe for this breeding season) and Tzigane (look at his offspring and performance record so far). Both Tanzeln and High Knight carry blood successfully crossed with Mozart mares in Europe, the others have lots of offspring to look at. Good luck - email me privately if you like.

Lara, that is my girl!
I have finally posted some photos of her on my website:
http://www.shenanigansstables.homestead.com/OurMares.html
She is a bit portly in the photos. But it will give everyone an idea of her conformation. I would like to add a bit of refinement, and from what I have been told she was full of herself in her younger days, so a stallion that passes on trainability is a plus. Of course, the conformation and movement must be there. I am breeding for myself for dressage. I'd love a filly, so I can replace my mare eventually, and use her for myself! And marketability is very important to me as well, as I would like to slowly build a nice breeeding program.

Joie,
She looks like a grand old dam!
The one thing that really shouts at me and it might be due to her age is that she looks like she has a longer back and a slightly steep shoulder.
It might also be a photo distortion. But if not, that is the first thing I would look for in a cross for her. I would definitely consider a shorter backed stallion with some really free shoulder movement.
Otherwise she looks like a marvelous mare. Do you have a picture of her 2003 foal or is it somewhere on the -net?
