Thanks for asking, Heather.
The Eastern German states are in bad shape, actually, most of them worse than after WWII. An estimated 5 Mio people are on the run in East German, Austria, Bavaria and the Tchech Republic. The German government estimates the losses to about one trillion $. We don't know what to think right now, we're basically all numb with the devastation and losses of these poor people. I live in the old part of Regensburg, right on the banks of the river Danube, which was flooded big time. The water stopped about 3 houses down the street from my apartment. My horses live far away, so are fine, but I felt so bad for all te folks that lost everything ina couple of hourse. In soem bars and restaurants, the water stood under the ceiling!
East Germany hasn't seen it all yet. The river Elbe is still rising and has not reached Lower Saxony yet. It will also get to Hamburg, and people living in these areas are frantically building walls and expecting the worst. Two state studs had to be evacuated. I saw pictures of dead animals, cows, pigs, horses, floating in the floods. It is just totally unbelievable. My thoughts are with those that lost so much. And thanks to you all over there for thinking about us too.

Maren, how awful! We talk pretty often to my uncle in Laatzen (near Hanover), but he had not mentioned how bad it was in parts of Germany. Lots of people are thinking about you folks from the other side of the pond!

I've been too busy cleaning up floods in my barn here in Iniana and trying to kill the mosquitoes to know that Germany was getting hammered, too. The horses have handled it OK. Mine prefer to hang out under the oak trees around the pasture to the lean-to - even in the worst weather.

The posts about flooding were from August last year.
I don't think flooding in Germany is a problem this year.

Oops - sorry - just goes to show how fried and out of tune I am. Last night was the first I watched any world news in too long and see that Europe is being fried right now. We can fuction just fine in 95+ degree heat, it's normal for much of the US in summer, but I really feel for the horses over there since horses are better adapted to be cold weather critters. I hope they're getting lots of cold baths.
